Largest collection of mummies on display in the world

One may definitely assume that it was the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. But the tombs present in the Valley of the kings has only 65 mummies in total.

Mummies of Guanajuato in Mexico is the largest collection of mummies on display. It was there in the city of Guanajuato having 111 mummies in total of which 59 mummies were on display.

They had been made between 1870 and 1958. There was cholera outbreak in 1833 in Mexico.  Due to increasing dead bodies, the room is not sufficient and soon it became a serious issue. So, the government enacted a law to impose burial tax to  families in order to keep their deceased relative buried. This tax was later abolished in 1958.

The climate of Guanajuato provides an environment which can lead to a type of natural mummification. By the 1900 s, this place started  attracting tourists and cement workers began to charge  money to enter into the place. Soon, this place turned out into a museum named El Museo de las Momias (“The Museum of the Mummies”) in 1969.

Here comes the interesting story of this museum, there was a mummy which was buried alive named Ignacia AguilarShe suffered from a strange sickness which makes her heart appeared to stop repeatedly. Once she became sick with Cholera, her parents mistook her for dead, quickly burying her. Years later, when she was disinterred due to nonpayment of the burial tax, she was discovered face down in her coffin, her forehead covered with scratch marks, and her mouth full of blood from biting down on her own arm.
